On August 10th, 2024, the young lawyers, legal academics, and human rights activists who had supported the student movement and provided legal assistance convened for the first time since the victory. This was the first meeting of Anti- Discrimination Legal Forum (ADLF).
The meeting took place at the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association Hall Room at around 5 p.m.
The session was attended by prominent figures such as Barrister Sara Hossain, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh; Barrister Aneek R. Haque, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh (Currently Honourable Additional Attorney General of Bangladesh); Ainun Nahar Lipi, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh (Currently Honourable Judge of the High Court Division, of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh) and many other distinguished legal practitioners, academics, and human rights activists.
During the discussion, participants shared harrowing stories of the unrest and the police brutality inflicted upon innocent students. The conversation then shifted to suggestions for changes they wished to see in the judicial system and the broader reforms needed in the country.
There was a shared hope that the current interim government would take notice of these recommendations and work to implement them, ensuring a clear separation of powers and an independent Supreme Court to maintain checks and balances within the democratic system.
